About us

In their own words

Students, volunteers and neighbors share why they choose The Freedom Café.

Kathy Stacy

Broke college students like me can get a good drink for a great cause.

“I choose the Freedom Café because I like what they’re doing. I didn’t realize how much trafficking was going on in the world. My friend Rachel started educating me about it, and that’s what brought me here; to support the cause. The best part? You pay whatever for drinks so even a broke college student like me can get a good drink for a great cause.”

I know my money is going toward a good cause.

“It’s a great organization. There is a lot of overlap between social justice issues and the environment. We wanted an open mic for Earth Day and we’ve worked with [the café] before. On a personal level, I choose them because I know my money is going toward a good cause. Not to mention supporting groups in the community is mutually beneficial; we both get to spread our message.”

Ethical. Great community. Great coffee and tea.

“I choose the Freedom Café because it’s ethical and their coffee and tea is good. I could go to Dunks but I feel better supporting a good cause. I’m biased but you honestly couldn’t find better people to buy from. The people are a community.”

So we can better lives.

“I’ve always enjoyed volunteer work and this café has a wonderful community supporting this cause. Being educated and having this knowledge is very important information to get out there so that we can better lives; community service is our rent for living.”

A hidden gem.

“For me, the coolest thing about [college] is the different opportunities and diversity of things to get involved with that you didn’t really have in high school, at least my high school because I came from a small town. Just hearing about regular everyday people who have these huge ideas and hearts and desires who want to make a difference in the world, it’s incredible to see that happen.”

Reinvention of the coffeehouse.

“What I like most is the sense of community, I think that the Freedom Café is the reinvention of the coffeehouse that used to be a place where people come together and they share ideas and create something new and larger than themselves. It’s a place where you can create something new with other people.”

Everybody can make a difference.

“It’s an easy way to help. Everyone can do their little bit to end this issue that seems to be so large. Everybody can make a difference.”

Perform for Freedom.

“I like the cause. I went to the Perform for Freedom for the first time with my roommate. I liked the environment and the people there. So I decided to learn more.”

Easy way as a student to help the cause.

“I believe in supporting fair trade coffee and it’s also delicious, there’s great community networking, I love all of the people that work there. Also human trafficking is a really big issue and I think it’s important to do something about it, and this is a great easy way as a student to help the cause.”
